7 Benefits of a Sustainability Approach at EPA. The essence of the sustainability framework presented in this report is to enable environmental decision makers to consider the longer-term and intergenerational social, environmental, and economic (the “three pillars”) impacts. The book supports the goals of the water-monitoring program in encouraging community members to learn about Hempstead Harbor as an important habitat for marine life and other species. It also describes the critical relationship between the ecology of the harbor and sound and the quality of life (as well as the economy) of surrounding communities.
These include one of the first community Right-to-Know laws in the nation (), the first toxic sediment cleanup in San Diego Bay's Convair Lagoon (), designation of the South Bay National Wildlife Refuge (), the imposition of fines for illegal discharges into San Diego Bay by General Dynamics' National Steel and Shipbuilding. Proper wastewater management and disposal protect public health and Idaho's surface and ground water resources. DEQ's Wastewater Program establishes standards for on-site wastewater systems (septic systems) and issues wastewater reuse permits limiting the amount of wastewater that may be land applied for irrigation.
A few words should be said about the coverage and organization of this appendix. It focuses on contaminated sediments.
